Mental Health Peer Support Worker, Wellington

The Mental Health Peer Support Worker is part of a newly-established team delivering a new, innovative mental health service for our Pacific peoples in the Wellington region. This service is flexible, mobile, community-based support services for Pacific peoples who are experiencing mental distress (service user) so they are able to be well, and thrive and prosper in their community. The Peer Support Worker brings lived experience to the talanoa, service and team.

This role will involve:

  • working closely with service users and their support person(s) (if appropriate) to develop and implement health and wellbeing plans;

  • assisting our service users to access a range of services, including community-based activities, social networks, health education and employment options and social services;

  • facilitating linkages to natural supports to increase service users' independence;

  • establishing and maintaining active relationships with community agencies and health services to ensure effective coordination of support services; and

  • collaborating with clinical mental health service teams when appropriate.

The successful candidate will have;

  • lived experience of mental illness and/or addictions;

  • knowledge and understanding of Pacific mental health issues, cultures and approaches;

  • a NZQA Level 4 qualification in mental health and addictions or an equivalent qualification (or working towards these);

  • experience working in a community setting; and

  • satisfied all necessary requirements for working with vulnerable children and adults including police vetting requirements.
