Last week was Uike Lea Faka Tonga – Tongan Language Week and Vaka Tautua got amongst the action in true Tongan style! This year’s theme was ‘Ko e kai ia ‘a e Tonga – Enriching Aotearoa with Tongan Wisdom’ so  it seemed fitting to have Vaka Tautua’s General Manager, Manu Fotu, share with staff an introduction to the history of Tonga.

Vaka Tautua staff participated in events up and down the country. Even in the deep south of Christchurch Vaka Tautua’s Tongan Disability Coordinator Kaiongo Tupou got stuck in with the Tongan Language week celebrations. “It was a great time of remembrance for Tongan culture, tradition and language and it’s always a great time catching up with the community. It’s the only time of the year, where we feel like we’re back at home [In Tonga].”

“It is a time not only of learning, but respect of who we are, and it’s our chance to enhance the significance of our Tongan culture.” Says Tupou.
